This silk and wool damask was originally woven for Stolzenfels Castle in Germany. The original fabric was woven in the first half of the 19th century, to fit into the rebuilt medieval castle that had been recreated in a neo-romantic spirit. Fabrics with acanthus leaf patterns began to appear in the 13th-14th centuries and became really popular in the 16th century. The fabric is reversible and has slightly different expressions depending on whether the warp or weft threads provide the background.
